We
boldly started our Guinness Irish Toast Contest last month during the Halfway to St Patrick’s Day
Celebration. To a full room
more than 25 people got there free Guinness and free Guinness glass when they
presented their toasts. It was a
good deal of fun amidst the rest of the activities. Remember this is the contest where the ultimate winner that
can win a trip for two to Las Vegas.
This will be our 3rd year running this fun event where every
participant is a winner. The
contest runs from September to March with each contest producing 6 qualifiers
who win hats or shirts but who are then entered into the finals during the week
of St Patrick’s Day. Remember you
have to qualify to make the finals by placing in one of the monthly
contests. The contest is held
monthly at O’Toole’s on the 3rd Saturday of the month.
We
held our Second Annual Golden Pratie Golf Challenge last month.
The Friends of Saint Patrick and the Wild Shamrocks met on the links to determine the better group of hackers amidst the
Irish. The Golden Spud was wrested from the hands of the FOSP and
will now honor the Wild Shamocks for this year. The Golden Pratie (Potato) championship award for this
tournament that will be displayed proudly at O’Toole’s throughout the year. All you Wild Shamrocks come on down to
see the award presented this month at 5:30 pm on Tuesday the 17th. You fine members of the Friends should
come down and congratulate the
The
Notre Dame Alumni Club of Hawaii
has chosen O’Toole’s to be their official location to watch the every Notre
Dame football game this season.
Whenever the game is televised locally you can count on the fine folks
at O’Toole’s to be open whether the game is at 7am or 4pm. Say hello to Diane behind the bar, Lori
serving you on the floor, and Frankie cooking up those special breakfasts in
the kitchen. There will be plenty
of Fighting Irish fans every week to share in the run toward the BCS bowls.
The
Saint Andrew’s Society had
their big bash of the year, Dressed to the Kilt, at the Hawaii Prince Hotel on the 30th
of September. The event was well
attended and the entertainment was unique. Members of the society put on a rollicking good play with
song, dance and plenty of good humor.
Bagpiper Robert Watt
of Derry County, Ireland
dazzled the crowd with his
virtuousity. A fellow guest
at our table best described him as the Eddy Van Halen of Bagpipers.
The
New World Celts will get
together for their first social event to celebrate Samhain on Saturday November
4th, 7:30Pm at O’Toole’s.
The group will get together socially to celebrate being a Celt amidst
other Celts. If you feel you would
like to meet some fellow Celts we invite you to come along and meet our
members. This group’s intent is to
keep alive the interest in Celtic culture here in the Americas and beyond. They are a multi-Celtic organization
with a mission. I and some key
members of existing organizations in Hawaii have joined and formed a Hawaii
Chapter of the New World Celts.
Hopefully this can be a springboard to creating a true month long Celtic
Festival here in Honolulu. Check
out their website and soak up some heritage, then come join them or another
Society here in Hawaii.
If
you are a member of the Friends of St Patrick, you should know that a monthly meeting will be
held on the third Saturday of every month at O’Toole’s Irish Pub at 3:30pm. We
will have a meeting and social entertained withy Irish Music performed by Two
Hearts (Two members of the Irish Heart, Lisa Gomes and Curtis Vanderloop)
We will have an upcoming
gamewatch at Kapiolani park on Saturday the 14th at 11am. We will gather to give support to the Hawaii
Harlequins Rugby team in their
match against Maui. They will also
be having their post tournament Drink Up at O’Toole’s that evening at
6:30pm. For those who don’t know
the Harlequins were founded by an Irishman in 1964. Transplanted Irishman, Dr. Jack Keenan, along with two
friends - Bob Hampton and Brian O’Neil - took it upon themselves to form the
Hawaii Harlequins Rugby Football Club.
Next month we will try to put together a Genealogical meeting for the
month of November.
Next
month we will try to put together a Genealogical meeting for the month of
November. We will have a speaker
on Irish Genealogy and a maker of Coats of Arms available at the meeting. That should make some good and timely
Christmas presents.
Two
big upcoming events in Honolulu will be the Makem and Spain Brothers Concert on Saturday, January 20th at The Events
at Aloha Tower Venue and the Irish Music Cruise following on Monday the 22nd. More information regarding the concert
will be forthcoming this month as the details get ironed out and you could
expect to start buying tickets by the 1st of November. The Irish Music Cruise I believe still
has available space if you should like to take a pub flavored spin about the
islands.
I
want to thank all the people who continue to make this letter possible by their
willingness to keep me informed of Celtic events throughout the Islands. I may write the letter but it is merely
an accumulation of everybody’s contributions about things Celtic that allows me
to keep everybody informed. So
let’s thank those contributors and should you know of any event let me
know. Don’t be bashful or assume
that everybody already knows. It
is through our Hawaiian Coconut Telegraph that the info gets into this letter.
If
you enjoyed any or all of the entertainment then this is what this letter is
about. It is that attempt to bring
you more of what is Celtic to all of you more often and with genuine
feeling. Thanks for participating.
I
hope you have all found this letter helpful in finding Celtic events here in
the Islands. Please feel free to
write me regarding the letter to make comments, suggestions or sources for more
things Celtic to add to the letter.
Now lend an ear for this month’s news and events.

Warrior Poets Scottish
Society (Big Island)
Our
Big Island Brethren are looking to put on events and grow their
organization. Any one interested
in Scottish Culture on the Island of Hawaii should check out this organization. Amy Hoff is the prime mover there and
would appreciate any likeminded Celts to help her and her Warrior Poets
Scottish Society to expand and create a few larger events. Thanks, and I hope the rest of the
Scottish community gets involved with events on the Big Island, which is
steeped in Scottish history.
The organization
is defunct at the moment, as Amy is in Canada learning Gaelic. Should any others who were involved in
the group like to keep me up to date from Hawaii it would be greatly
appreciated.
Scottish Country Dancers
The
Scottish Country Dancers are now joining Celtic Waves for a few Scottish dances
on the first Wednesday of each month at O'Toole’s. Our contact person for

So once again, here is my effort to help coordinate a listing of all
things Celtic. I will create a monthly listing of any events that have the
Celtic Connection, whether it is newly released movies, local plays, Scottish
music or Irish dance performances.
I intend to e-mail anybody who would like to be in the know on these
sorts of things.
That means you can be a
help in two ways. You can provide
me information on upcoming events or you can help build the email list of the
Celtic uninformed so we can reach out to them. If you or your business has a tie to things Irish or
Scottish, etc. please let me know and I’ll help spread the word. Contact me by e-mail at
bill@ejlounge.com or contact me at 926-4711, to give me any information on

IRISH
PRIEST IN TEXAS (contributed by John Diaz)
Father O'Malley rose from his bed. It was a fine spring day in his new Texas
mission parish. He walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of
the beautiful day outside. He then
noticed there was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his front lawn. He promptly called the local police
station. The conversation went
like this:
"Good morning. This is Sergeant Jones. How might I help you?"
"And the best of the day te yerself. This is Father O'Malley at St. Brigid's
There's a jackass lying dead in me front lawn. Would ye be so kind as to send a
couple o' yer lads to take care of the matter?"
Sergeant Jones, considering himself to be quite a wit, replied with a smirk,
"Well now father, it was always my impression that you people took care of
last rites!"
There was dead silence on the line for a long moment.
Father O'Malley then replied: "Aye, tis certainly true, but we are also
obliged to notify the next of kin."
Demise of the Black Watch
I received this from Bill McDonald in NZ. Bill was a member of one of
these regiments (I can't remember which specific one, though). The Black Watch,
and other regiments and symbols of the Scottish struggle for freedom are
no more. It is beyond sad, it is reprehensible, a deliberate act of
insensitivity and arrogance.

'ROUNDS' SYSTEM PARTLY
TO BLAME FOR IRISH DRINKING
Latest statistics about Irish drinking habits have shown that younger adult
males have an average of
11 drinks each on a night out, largely due to the system of 'rounds' that is
part of Irish culture.
Ireland is at the top of the league table for alcohol consumption in Europe. A
recent WHO study
of 11 European countries also found that the Mater hospital in Dublin receives
more drink-related
cases than hospital in any of the countries.
Further calls by the medical profession for access to alcohol to be restricted
have been made, as
well as an abolition of advertising.
The Government has responded with the introduction of random breath-testing. No
longer do Gardai have
to form an impression that a person is under the influence of drink before they
can breathalyze
them. Now, anyone anywhere can be breathalaysed.
IMF IDENTIFIES 3 THREATS TO IRISH ECONOMY
The International Monetary Fund (IF) has identified 3 possible dangers to the
Irish economy.
The first of these is the Irish obsession with property which is fuelling the
construction boom,
boosting employment and immigration, which in turn have a big effect on
Government revenue from VAT,
Income Tax, and Stamp Duty. If there is a slowdown in the property market,
perhaps caused by a jolt
to interest rates, then the Irish economy could suffer greatly.
The IF has suggested that the small Irish economy is particularly vulnerable to
an 'external shock'.
For example, the recent surge in energy prices has fuelled inflation to over
4%, its highest level in
over 3 years. Any major international event could have a very damaging effect
on the Irish economy.
The General Election is likely to be held next May and the IF has added its
voice to those who have
already warned the Fianna Fail government against 'buying' the election, by using
government
spending to curry favour with the electorate.
Irish wage costs continue to surge and, combined with the strength of the EURO,
has seriously
eroded competitiveness. The IF expects the Irish economy to grow by 6.2% in
2006, well ahead of the
EU average.

“A session (seisiun in Gaelic) is a gathering of Irish traditional musicians for the purpose of celebrating their common interest in the music by playing it together in a relaxed, informal setting...as an elaborate excuse for getting out of the house and spending an evening with friends over a few pints of beer.”

The last evening of the month is of course the Celtic New Year, SAMHAIN
(pronounced 'sha-ven' or 'sow-en' depending where you were).
The Celts believed on that night between the passing of the old year, and
the arrival of the new, that the veil between our world and the Otherworld
(or spirit world) was thinnest, and that spirits and faerie folk could visit
the human world, and vice versa, and that you could contact your passed
ancestors. That belief has continued with today's Halloween traditions of
witches and ghosts, etc. The Christian church called the festival 'The Feast
of all Saints', on 'All Saints' Eve' or 'All Hallows' Eve', hence the term
"Hallowe'en". More info on our webpage 'CELTS- Beliefs' at
www.mauiceltic.com.
